This 6.8km return hike usually takes between 2-3 hours and gives you arguably the best views in the park without requiring an overnight camping trip.
The walk starts from the Telegraph Saddle car park, and right from the get-go, you're heading uphill. It's a Grade 4 walk, which means it's a bit more challenging than your average stroll – expect a steady incline for most of the way. The track is well-maintained gravel road, mostly wide compacted gravel, so you won't be bush-bashing or scrambling over rocks for the majority of the climb.
The real grunt comes in the final stretch. The last 100 metres involves a steep climb up timber and granite steps, which can be a bit of a leg-burner if you're not ready for it. Take your time, use the bench seats scattered along the track if you need a breather, and you'll be fine.
At 558 metres, Mt Oberon isn't particularly high, but the summit punch well above its weight when it comes to views. You get a panoramic sweep of the entire southern tip of the Prom – Tidal River below, the coastline stretching out in both directions, and those distinctive offshore islands dotting the ocean. On a clear day, it's genuinely spectacular.
This is one of the busier walks, if you prefer less people, try Mt Bishop which as equally good views, and a nicer bush track up to the summit.
Bring plenty of water, wear decent shoes with grip for those stairs, and remember there's no shelter at the top. The summit can be windy and exposed, so pack a jacket even if it's warm down below. And if you're up for an early start, sunrise from the top is supposed to be pretty special.
