Wilsons Prom is famous for a lot of things – iconic beaches, challenging hikes, and views that stick with you long after you’ve left. But if you’re looking for a walk that offers incredible coastal scenery and a bit more solitude than some of the busier spots, the Pillar Point track might just be your new favourite.

Starting from Norman Beach car park, the Pillar Point walk is a fantastic way to experience some classic Prom landscapes without committing to an epic journey. It’s a good middle-distance hike, clocking in around 8.4 kilometres return. This makes it a perfect half-day adventure, leaving you time to relax on the beach or explore another corner of the park.

In terms of difficulty, it's generally rated as moderate. You'll encounter some gentle undulations, a few steeper sections, and a mix of sandy paths and more rugged, rocky terrain. It’s a proper bushwalk, so sturdy shoes are a must. The trail winds its way along the coast, often providing glimpses of the ocean through the dense coastal scrub, and you'll definitely feel like you're earning those views.

What makes Pillar Point truly special, though, is the ever-changing scenery and the stunning coastal drama. As you trek along, you’ll be treated to spectacular clifftop views overlooking the turquoise waters of Norman Bay and out towards the vast Bass Strait. The landscape is raw and beautiful, with granite outcrops and a vibrant tapestry of native vegetation. It’s a great spot for birdwatching too, so keep an eye out for seabirds soaring overhead.

The highlight, of course, is Pillar Point itself. This granite headland offers incredible panoramic vistas. You can look back along the coastline towards Tidal River, gaze out at the vast expanse of the ocean, and appreciate the rugged beauty of the Prom's untouched wilderness. It’s often less crowded than other lookouts, giving you space to soak it all in, listen to the waves, and truly connect with nature.
