Tongue Point Wilsons Prom

One of our favourite places to visit down the prom. Tongue point is a lovely point to hang out for snack on the boulders as you watch the rock pools, birds, and sometimes seal playing in the water in front. If you walk from Darby River you'll also have the opportunity to experience Fair Cove, a cute little beach on low tide.

How to get there

There are two entries to Tongue Point, one via Darby River, the second via Darby Saddle.

1. Darby River to Tongue Point is steep walk from the carpark as it climbs the bush covered dune, but does taper off to be a pleasant stroll from there. A fantastic stop along the way is Fairy Cove. A secluded beach thats well worth a dip in the ocean, this is best enjoyed on low tide when there is sand, on high tide the waves break up against the rocks. See Wilsons Prom tides for daily high and low times.

2. Darby Saddle to Tongue Point, car park here. This is a easier entry into Tongue Point. Walking along the top of Whiskey Bay, be sure to stop at Sparks Lookout and take in the view of Norman Island.

Snacks, and supplies

Always take snacks, its one of the best parts of hiking. Depending on your walking speed, its about 1.5 to 2 hours walk, take some water with you.

Coming from both sides. The first half offers tree shade, as make your way into the second half of the work out towards the point, trees shy away, you want a jacket in winter and a hat in summer. There are toilets at Darby River, no toilets at Darby Saddle or Tongue Point itself.

  • Be sure to check Parks Victoria website for any closures or change of conditions

  • If you see rubbish on the track, pick it up and take it to the nearest bin.

2. Mid day: Gurneys Cidery

Gurneys Cidery is a must visit for anyone in the area.

  • Views of Wilsons Promontory ✔️

  • Lovely garden to preuse on a sunny or not so sunny day ✔️

  • high-quality ciders, and delicious food ✔️

One of the standout features of Gurneys is its impressive range of ciders. Classic dry English-style ciders to more adventurous blends featuring flavors like rhubarb and ginger. We recommend the tasting paddle as a great way to sample multiple options,.

Beyond the drinks, wood-fired pizzas are a great addition. If you're not looking for a full meal we recommend the cheese and charcuterie platters.

On a warm lovely day, presue the gardens. On a wintery day, stay snug in their cozy sun rooms. If you haven’t visited Gurneys, you should – and if you have, you should visit again!

3. Early afternoon: Foster Op Shop

What sets Foster Op Shop apart is its warm, welcoming vibe. Operated entirely by passionate volunteers, the shop is a true labor of love, with all proceeds going back to support the local Hospital and Age Care. Knowing that every purchase helps fund local projects and organisations makes shopping here feel even more rewarding.

Foster Op Shop is a must-visit. Stop by, have a browse, and see what treasures you can uncover. You’ll leave with a full bag, a happy heart, and the knowledge that you’ve supported a great cause.

5. Afternoon:

Pick up some supplies from Aherns, the local produce shop that houses fantastic fresh fruit and veges you can use for dinner by the fire. It's also got a bunch of unique spices, chocolates, and health foods.

One of our favourites is their home made peanut butter. For the most part, a knife is normally supplemented with a tea spoon for optimal consumption 😛

Also, if you have good timing. Check out the two local markets, one at the foster show grounds open Sundays (typically on a long weekend), November to April. From 8 am – 1 pm. Market entry: $2 adult cash, children free. the other has a calendar here

6. Evening: Dinner by the fire

You have two options here. One is to head along to the Fish Creek pub, a cozy art deco with all of your staple menu options. Alternatively cook at home and snuggle up to the fire inside our in the backyard under the stars.
